SUMMARY:Northeast Ohio Pollinator Society 2025 Winter Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:To Register: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_IrdCOyuuSSaqjTUVwkbapQ#/registration \nJanuary 8th – Dave Tomashefski – Making the most of your tree with a soft landing garden.\nPlanting a soft landings garden beneath a tree is one of the best ways to support biodiversity in\nyour yard. Join Dave Tomashefski of Meadow City Native Plant Nursery to learn how soft landings\ngardens support butterflies and moths in completing their lifecycles (and so much more!) This\nworkshop is a great opportunity to maximize the benefits of tree cover in your growing space.\nAs Meadow City's education specialist\, Dave Tomashefski is responsible for the nursery’s\neducational programs and materials. His gift is finding the perfect plant for everyone! Prior to co-\nfounding Meadow City in Cleveland\, Dave worked at the Soil\, Water and Environmental Lab at Ohio\nState\, where he also earned his master's degree. \nJanuary 22nd – Denise Ellsworth – Wild Bees in Your Ohio Backyard\nMany gardeners know a honeybee when they see one\, but how about some of the other 400+\nspecies of bees that call Ohio home? This program will focus on some of the most common bees\,\nincluding their fascinating biology and life histories. We’ll also discuss plant choices and landscape\npractices to support our native pollinators. Why do bumble bees vibrate their wing muscles to the\ntone of a middle C? How uncommon are queens in the bee world? Why do leaf cutting bees cut\ndiscs from leaves and petals? And how important are these native bees to pollination and\nbiodiversity? \nDenise directs pollinator education programming through the Ohio State University Department of\nEntomology a position she has held since 2012. In her Extension and outreach work\, Denise\nsupports and teaches beekeepers\, farmers\, gardeners\, and others across the state through a variety\nof workshops\, webinars\, written materials\, and electronic resources.\nBefore coming to Entomology\, Denise served for 18 years as agriculture and natural resources\ncounty extension educator in the Akron/Canton area with a focus on horticulture\, integrated pest\nmanagement and environmental education. \nIn addition to chasing bees\, Denise enjoys gardening\, cycling\, and hiking the towpath trail along the\nTuscarawas River with her husband and dogs. \nFebruary 5th – John Blakeman – Creating and Managing a Prairie Meadow\nJohn Blakeman\, experienced Ohio prairie biologist\, will explain\, with both graphics and\nexplanations\, how authentic Ohio tallgrass prairies can be planned\, prepared for\, planted\, and\nmanaged so as to provide beautiful natural habitats that support pollinating insects\, capture and\nretain nutrients in runoff flows to minimize harmful algal blooms\, and enhance soil health. John has\nbeen planting and managing Ohio prairie planting since 1973 and designs native plant landscapes\nthat feature prairie meadows and islands of prairie that support pollinating insects. \nJohn Blakeman is a retired biology instructor with 30 years of science teaching experience at\nPerkins Schools near Sandusky and is an experienced Ohio prairie researcher. John planted one of\nOhio’s first prairie restorations in Erie County in 1973 at Firelands College BGSU at Huron\, using\nnative prairie seeds collected from local prairie remnants and isolated plants in ditches and\nhedgerows. \nHe helped form the Ohio Prairie Association and served as its president. He has presented papers\nat both state and national prairie conferences and is regarded as an expert in the history of Ohio’s\ntallgrass prairies. As proprietor of Meadow Environments LLC\, he professionally designs\, installs\,\nand maintains prairie restorations and landscapes at park\, educational\, and private sites\, including\nErie Metro Parks facilities\, the COSI museum in Columbus\, and at commercial sites across Ohio. \nFebruary 19th – Michael Keeler – Matrix Design for Biodiverse Gardens\nLearn about matrix gardens and how to create your own! Matrix gardens are modeled on natural\nplant communities and relationships and provide a framework that simplifies plant selection\,\nlayout\, and installation. \nMichael Keeler is the founder and principal of Ohio Native Concepts. SUMMARY:2025 Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:2025 OSBA Zoom Planning Meeting – Saturday\, November 9th at 7:00 pm   \nSubject: We want your feedback and ideas as we prepare for the 2025 In-Person Board Meeting on Saturday\, December 7th. We will be sharing our current financials & budget\, Life Memberships for husband/wife or significant other\, some ideas for 2025\, and items that worked and what didn’t. \nDate & Time: Saturday\, November 9th at 7:00 pm \nInformation: This is free to attend by life\, paid\, or complimentary members. All attendees will have an opportunity to submit their questions through chat. If time allows\, we will open the microphones for live questions. Registration is required. \nBylaw Amendments: \nThere was some concern over the definition of compensation as it regards board members engaging in speaking engagements for the Traveling Speaker program or other activities that are not directly board-related but may involve OSBA-related activities. In order to clarify this bylaw\, we amended Article 10.7 to state: All officers\, Regional Directors\, and Regional Representatives serve without compensation. Board members are approved to function outside of their elected or appointed position when under contract per the terms of that contract for remuneration. Reimbursement for reasonable\, actual expenses incurred when acting in his/her capacity as a Board Member or on behalf of the corporation may be approved by the Board of Directors as necessary. \nOver the years\, especially during elections\, the question regarding voting privileges for Life Members has arisen regarding the number of votes allocated to that classification of membership. After much discussion\, the Board proposed a change to Article 4.1e: Life Membership: Available to any individual meeting the requirements of membership. Life members shall be granted the rights and privileges of membership for life upon the payment of $200\, one-time dues\, one vote. A spouse or significant other may be added to the life membership at the time of purchase for an additional $100\, and both individuals will have one vote each. In the event of a dissolution of the partnership\, the membership and voting privileges will be followed by the named individuals. Life memberships existing prior to January 1\, 2024\, with two people named\, will be recognized and granted two votes. This category of membership is not available under a business name or to a corporation. \nThis measure will be voted upon at the next board meeting on November 10\, 2024. If you have any input regarding this change\, please speak with your regional Representative or Director prior to that date.
